Reader frustrated when farm cat shot

Dear Davenport Times-Tribune:

I wish to register a protest the way some would-be hunters are taking the privilege of hunting.

I always supposed when a person had a hunting license and they should have one if they carry a gun, it gave them the privilege to hunt as prescribed by the law, and human decency and that does not include the right to shoot farmer animals, whether large or small.

Although they made a clean kill here, they did away with one of the farm animals’ best friend. Ours was a big black cat, Ratus, with white collar and white feet, and could not be imagined to be any other animal than what he was. Just a good old cat, eleven years old.

That cat was not on the highway, and in plain sight. He was trained in many ways, including chickens without bothering them. He caught anything that could be caught from mice, rats, snakes, weasels and most anything a cat is supposed to catch. Sure, he caught birds, but the pheasants he caught were run over or hit by some careless driver of which are many.

Some people think all cats are alike, but they are as wrong as if they said – all people are alike. Ours was above average; not because we raised him from a kitten along with the family, but he minded his own business and was far more of a gentlemen cat than the person how pulled the trigger of his rifle on him..

Davenport High hosts Veterans Day Program

The Davenport High School Speech Class, organized by Mrs. Betty Heid, hosted a Veterans’ Day Program.

The Davenport Times reported that “The abilities and creativity of our young people are sometimes staggering, to say the least. Right, when you think that they have reached some pinnacle of success, they turn around and make a new pinnacle. This is a tribute to the creativity and patriotism of the students and their ability. The parents of Davenport can be proud of these students and their ability.”
