Council approves Reardan Heroes acreage

REARDAN – Reardan Heroes, a nonprofit organization with an aim to construct a memorial honoring town native and Medal of Honor recipient Joe E. Mann and other local war veterans, is one step closer to its goal.

Without hesitation, council unanimously approved a land use application for a 3.91 acre plot of land donated to Reardan Heroes by town local Susan Eastman at its Jan. 21 meeting. Eastman verbally donated the currently residential acreage in 2019, according to a Nov. 28, 2019 article in The Times.

The land is on the northeast side of town. The shores of Audubon lake are on the northeast side of the property, and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad runs diagonally along the south end of where the memorial.

"There will be a community amphitheater, a walkway with the names of the area's veterans, a water feature and an eternal flame in a park-like atmosphere," the Reardan Heroes website states when describing what the memorial will look like. "The landscaping will create a quiet, reverent and spiritual area where visitors can pause to remember and pay their respects to the men and women of the area that have given their service and often lives for our freedom."

Mayor Gail Daniels, who is also the president of Reardan Heroes, said the organization hopes that the memorial will eventually be accessible from Highway 2, but initially, will likely be accessed from Highway 231 via a right turn.

Daniels also said that the organization hopes for construction to start this year, but a builder has not been officially solidified yet.
