DAVENPORT--Two minutes into the second half of Thursday's NE2B semifinal match between Davenport and Northwest Christian (Colbert), Ellie Telford struck a corner to Darby Soliday, whose header rolled into the back of the net. That proved to be all the Gorillas needed and all the Gorillas would get, as the Davenport defense pitched a shutout en route to a 1-0 victory.
With the win, Davenport advanced to Saturday's NE2B league final against the winner of the second semifinal match between St. George's and Reardan, which was ongoing at time of publication.
The Gorillas beat NWC in regulation for the first time this season. In the first regular season matchup at Davenport, the two teams drew. They drew again a couple weeks later at NWC, but Davenport was able to win 4-3 in penalty kicks.
The reigning 2B state champions won't have a chance to defend their state title with no such competition this year, but can wrap up the storied careers of Soliday, Telford and Milei Floyd with another league title if the Gorillas win Saturday.
