Valverde places first in weekend races

Stumpjumpers' White Knuckle and Frostbite event races on Mar. 27-28

ODESSA – Joshua Valverde took first place in the Open C class of the Frostbite short course race on Saturday, Mar. 27 and again in the Open C class of the White Knuckle short course on Sunday, Mar. 28. On Saturday, fellow Odessa participants Holden Iverson, Corbyn Neilsen and Tucker Walter also raced. Joshua Valverde's father Donald also raced, in the Senior C class, and placed 12th.

On Sunday, Valverde, Walter and Iverson all raced again, with Valverde first, Walter finishing in 7th place in the 15-and-under category and Iverson, unfortunately, unable to finish. Given the wind and dust that arrived on Sunday, it was a pretty awful day for spectators. The racers, of course, will ride in any weather.

Local residents may have heard some of the commotion going on at the race site just outside of Odessa's southern town limits. The evening also involved fireworks, according to reports.

Valverde is the son of Donald and Heather Valverde. He is a sophomore at Odessa High School, where he participates in football and FBLA. The other three boys are eighth-graders, who also participate in football (junior-high) and other sports.

Walter is the son of Colley Walter and HaLee Walter, grandson of Bruce and Debbie Walter and great-grandson of Barb and Jerry Walter, all of Odessa. Tucker is the eldest of four brothers.

Neilsen is the son of Casey and Terri Neilsen. He has a sister and three brothers.

Iverson is the son of Brenik and Kamie Iverson and the grandson of David and Sharon Iverson of Spokane. He has two younger sisters.
