Tigers pound Tigers in lopsided catfight

ODESSA – The Odessa High School baseball season opened last Saturday at home with a double header against Republic. This Tigers vs Tigers matchup saw the Odessa team overpower Republic by a score of 29 -2 in the first game and 15-3 in the second game. No stats were provided for the games, so all we can report are the final scores and a few personal observations. The first game began with the Odessa team pounding the ball for a 3-0 score in the first inning, with Jett Nelson hitting a home run. Tim DeWulf on the mound held the opposing team hitless until about the third inning. Sometime after the second inning, we overheard one of the umpires telling assistant coach Jeff Nelson that DeWulf's curve ball was a "thing of beauty."

As head coach Larry Weber and his assistant Nelson prompted judicious batting and aggressive base-running by the Odessa team, the score kept moving upward through four very long innings. As younger, less experienced players were substituted into the game, Republic was able to pick up a couple of runs but was simply overmatched.

Although other obligations kept us from staying for the second game, we certainly witnessed some stellar ability and adept coaching of this Odessa Tiger team in game one.
