Estate sale nearly turns explosive

Live grenade found while preparing for sale on Main Street

DAVENPORT – This wasn’t what Bruno Mars meant when he said “I’d catch a grenade for ya” in his hit 2010 song, “Grenade.” A live grenade was discovered by a Chattaroy man while he was preparing for an estate sale at 318 Main Street April 16, Sergeant Gabe Gants of the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office told council at council’s April 28 meeting.

According to the police report, Kevin Jenkins, a laborer cleaning out the house in preparation for said estate sale, called the sheriff’s office to report that he’d found what appeared to be a “lemon” grenade in a fanny pack with a few other miscellaneous caliber rounds. Deputy Dan Christian took the grenade from Jenkins to the sheriff’s office range, where he contacted chief criminal deputy Kody Becker.

Becker got pictures of the grenade and contacted the Fairchild Air Force Base bomb squad, who came and confirmed that the grenade was live.

The bomb squad had to set up a controlled explosion to neutralize the grenade.

No other reports of live grenades at estate, garage or yard sales here have been reported to the sheriff’s office since then.
