Davenport to receive coronavirus relief funds

DAVENPORT – Most nationwide, state, county and local municipalities were allocated coronavirus local fiscal recovery funds from the federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) signed by President Joe Biden on March 11, and Davenport was no different. Council officially passed a resolution allowing mayor Brad Sweet to sign for those funds, which are estimated to be $243,417 in 2021 another $243,417 in 2022, at council’s June 9 meeting.

Sweet was officially notified by the state Office of Financial Management of the funds June 7. Davenport would be receiving 0.11% of the state’s overall funding allocation, which was determined by the state according to population estimates in 2019. Cosmopolis, Washington, a city of comparable size to Davenport, is expected to receive $231,972 per year over the next two years.

The funds must be used for virus-related expenses or purchases. The city has through 2026 to spend the funds.

The resolution was one of three passed by council June 9.

Council unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance to vacate 30 feet of the Ninth Street right of way east of the property line for better access to a proposed residence. The approval came after a public hearing where Shane Gilthvedt explained his request and answered questions about impact.

The vacation would allow Gilthvedt to bout a home on the property while allowing the city easement for water and sewer line access. The portion in question is on the Ninth Street block between Logan and Sinclair Streets.

Council also passed a resolution authorizing Sweet to enter an agreement with Century West Engineering for the design and construction of Phase 2 of the Davenport Sports Complex recreational trail.

The next council meeting is June 23 at 7 p.m. in city hall.
