Harrington's Summer Reading Program concludes

Thursday, July 29, the Summer Reading Program concluded with Kris Moritz, leader, with two assistants, Evie Mann and Erica Bailey. During their reading and learning session the children seemed intrigued by some of the creatures: blobfish, goblin shark, bird-eating tarantula, Japanese spider crab and the dugong (a cousin to the manatee). One of their crafts was making animals out of play dough, which allowed them to express their creativity. The final project had guidelines. Each was given pinecones to "paint" with peanut butter before rolling them in seeds, making personalized bird feeders. More than one child was seen sneaking a swipe of peanut butter into their mouth, apparently making sure that the peanut butter was indeed edible. Each feeder was placed in a plastic bag in the hopes of getting it home intact. Backpacks were provided for the children to carry home their rocks from last week's session, pictures and projects. Those who missed the last day will find their rocks were saved and are on the library desk for the children to pick up any day of the week, Monday to Thursday, during city hall hours, or Friday morning. Moritz has generously offered to lead the group next summer.

Harrington Senior Meals

The Harrington Mid-County Seniors are announcing that Senior Meals will be reinstated in Harrington beginning August 3. The present schedule will provide meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon at the Memorial Hall at 8 S. Third Street. For adults 60 and over there is a suggested donation of $4. The cost per meal for those under 60 is $8.50. Local resident Elizabeth Wolfe will be the cook.

Rummage and vintage sales

Friday morning, July 30, cars began arriving at the Rummage room and the Vintage Shoppe before 8:30 for a fundraiser event that opened at 9 a.m. No one was turned away, and from that time until closing there was a steady flow of people. In spite of the incredible heat and no other major event occurring, it seemed that the sales were their destination. Saturday was equally busy.

Opera house construction work

Following the construction of the stairs to the basement of the opera house building, additional work was needed in the rummage area to contain the area. Tom Van der Ende of Diamond Construction was hired to finish that portion of the project this week. He faced and sheet-rocked the new staircase. There are other small projects before the work is done including the floor, wiring, walls, doors and plumbing.

Opera house event

The Harrington Opera House Society accepted the opportunity for a return performance by Dr. Andres Jaramillo, pianist, who last performed on Sept. 14, 2014. That performance was entitled, "A Grand Interlude" and included solos and duets with Rebecca Hardy, as well as performances by Stephen Hardy and Dr. Randel Wagner. He currently serves as faculty at the Collinsworth School of Music at California Baptist University in Riverside, Calif.

Jaramillo is scheduled to appear Sunday afternoon, August 8, at 4 p.m. with local talents Rebecca Hardy, classical pianist, Stephen Hardy, baritone singer and saxophone player, and Alicia Mielke on flute. Their program will include solo music from Chopin, Bach, Rachmaninoff, and more. This is the first performance event since the fall of 2019, and admission will be by donation.

How people talk

We all know how people love to talk, but this past week has been an exceptional week for the number of compliments that have been heard regarding the coordination between the city clerk, the mayor and the public works department. Apparently the citizens in town are making requests of the city and have been quite pleased at the rapid response that has occurred as well as the final result. Hours have been changed at city hall on Fridays with the office being open from 9 a.m. to noon only, closing for training and other city duties.
