Researcher asks readers to look at old letters

HARRINGTON – Historic researcher and storyteller Rebecca Hom has asked for our readers to look in their family's old letters and see if they have any information regarding the WASPs from World War II. As unlikely as it seems, local readers might have letters written by Katherine Applegate and Vivian Witt, Harrington alumni from the Class of 1921. It was Vivian who sent the obituary of Katherine to The Citizen. Vivian had been an early telephone operator in Harrington and later resided in Illinois where she was a professional artist. Anyone having personal anecdotes about the women of the WASP group would find a listening ear with Miss Hom. Visit http://www.rebeccahom.com or BackRoadsTeller@gmail.com .

HOHS

Harrington Opera House Society has engaged Bridges Home to perform Sept. 10 at 7 p.m. This group (Dave, Tami and Paul) performed in Harrington in 2016 with a total of 17 instruments, presenting a mixture of Americana, Celtic and Bluegrass music. They appeared again in Harrington in 2017, demonstrating their skill on nearly all manner of instruments including the guitar, tenor ukulele, clawhammer banjo, accordion, mandolin, cigar box guitar, resonator slide guitar, bass, Irish whistles, bodhran, stompbox and washboard. Dave Gunter and Tami Belzer Gunter are lead vocalists and multi-instrumentalists, who emphasize audience-pleasing originals and the stories that inspired them in their performances. They will thrill another audience Friday evening. Attendance is by donation.

Harrington Fall Festival

The Harrington Lions Club is continuing to plan to hold the Harrington Fall Festival this year on Sept. 25, but the Lincoln County Health Dept. has advised that, if the Lincoln County Fair created an upsurge in Covid cases, then Harrington would not be allowed to meet. As of today, the official position is "wait and see."
