Davenport football glides past Kettle Falls

DAVENPORT-After a string of three nail-biting, one-possession contests in the Gorillas' first six games this year, head coach Justin Reed and the Davenport faithful were hoping for a less stressful contest on Homecoming Friday, Oct. 15. That was received, as the Gorillas coasted by last-place Kettle Falls 49-8 in a game where most of the starters were pulled at halftime.

Davenport improved to 5-1 in league and 6-1 overall with the win while maintaining its second-place position in the NE2B, while Kettle Falls dropped to 0-5.

"It's always nice to have those wins where you don't have to be on the edge of your seat the entire game and pray everything goes well," Young said. "We needed this one after last week, so it's good momentum going into Chewelah."

Senior running back Marcus Delafield has been the focal point of the physical Davenport offense this season, but it was junior Jayvee Fudurich getting the job done Friday with five carries for 78 yards and three touchdowns. Junior Brenick Soliday added 40 yards and a touchdown on three carries in a game where nine different Gorillas toted the rock.

"Watching their defensive scheme, they were giving us the outside more then the inside. They were huge up front," Young said. "We had the speed to get to the outside, so it was a scheme thing."

Davenport led 14-0 after 54 seconds of play. Fudurich ran in his first touchdown from 20 yards out on the Gorillas' second play. Kettle Falls then failed to receive the ensuing kickoff, and Davenport recovered. On the next play, junior quarterback Evan Gunning found senior tight end Jarrett Jacobsen wide open for a 35-yard score.

Following a 28-yard Fudurich run and a 25-yard Soliday run, Davenport led 28-0 after the first quarter. Fudurich would add another touchdown in the second quarter, while Gunning would hit Jacobsen on a shovel pass for yet another score as the Gorillas took a 42-0 lead into intermission.

The second half was played with a running clock, and Davenport played predominantly junior varsity players after intermission. As a result, junior Trevor Lenocker got the most carries of any Gorilla, toting the rock nine times for 40 yards and a touchdown.

Kettle Falls couldn't muster any offense, and the Davenport defense flexed its muscles. Junior linebacker Sam Schneider notched 10 tackles, while Gunning had two sacks.

The challenge will be upped for the Gorillas this Friday on Senior Night when the Chewelah Cougars roll into town. Chewelah sits behind Davenport in third place in the NE2B, but its margin for error is slim after the Cougars took a second league loss in Colfax Oct. 15.

A Davenport win would clinch a top-two finish in the NE2B and homefield advantage in the crossover game with District 6. That crossover game will be a play-in to get into the state playoffs. A Chewelah win would move the Cougars within a half-game of Davenport with one game left to go.

"We're going to have to lock down our pass coverage, that's for sure," Young said. "We did a lot of work on that this last week, so I think our guys will tighten up and understand how they're supposed to play it. Chewelah passes a lot, and their defense is actually stronger than their offense, so we're going to have to scheme pretty well on offense."

Davenport vs. Chewelah kicks off at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 22.
