Movie scenes filmed in Reardan

Four Reardan students film scene as extras

REARDAN—A movie starring several recognizable Hollywood actors about two Fruitland brothers who made a music album in the 1970’s filmed some scenes in Reardan last week. Four students, one school staff member and two high school alumni from here were extras in one of the scenes.

The movie, titled "Dreamin’ Wild," stars Oscar winner Casey Affleck and Emmy winner Walton Goggins as brothers Donnie and Joe Emerson in a real-life tale about the two brothers from Fruitland who recorded a pop-funk album in the 1970s that was recently rediscovered and circulated in pop culture, including by "Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon.

The movie will show the two brothers as adults and as teenagers. Teenage Donnie and Joe will be played by Noah Jupe of "A Quiet Place Part 2" and Jack Dylan Grazer.

Emmy nominated actress Zooey Deschanel of "Elf" and "New Girl" fame will play Donnie’s wife, Dianne, and Grammy winner Beau Bridges plays the brother’s father, Don Senior.

The film is directed by one-time Academy Award nominee Bill Pohlad.

Film crews were spotted around town last week as scenes were filmed in front of Colville’s Gas Station and in a couple local homes.

Four local students, one school staff member and two high school alumni, had their time to shine when filming a scene as extras last Tuesday, Oct. 19.

High school ASB director Andrea McLaughlin was contacted about using students as extras in a 1970s barn party scene filmed at the old Buggy Barn on Tramm Road North, as local Maria Nilles has relatives working on the project.

McLaughlin recruited her children, Darby and Sterling McLaughlin, as well as Abe Nelson and Jasper Stroble to participate. Class of 2021 graduate Naomi Smith and Class of 2020 graduate Madison Casselberry were also part of the experience, which lasted until 1 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20.

“It was so surreal and very, very cool,” Andrea McLaughlin said about the experience. “It really was like we were on a legitimate movie set…the kids had to fill out bio sheets, and they all got paid for their work.”

Abe Nelson said his job was to stand against a truck and act as though he was enjoying the party’s festivities.

“It was a really fun experience,” Nelson said. “The lighting was insane…we got there and realized we were really in a movie.”

Sterling McLaughlin said his role was to pretend to flirt with a girl over a campfire.

“I definitely had some chemistry with one of the teenage girl actors,” McLaughlin proudly related.

"Dreamin’ Wild" doesn’t have a release date set yet, and filming is currently ongoing in Spokane.
