Some local races hotly contested, others aren't close
LINCOLN COUNTY--Three incumbents are trailing after the first election returns amongst the seven contested races in the Davenport, Reardan, Harrington, Edwall and Sprague areas. Challengers are defeating incumbents in races for Harrington school board, Fire District No. 4 and Fire District No. 5.
The most closely contested race lies in Fire District No. 5, where incumbent Matt Schneider trails challenger Don Staley. Staley has 263 votes to Schneider's 235, a 52.18% to 46.63% disparity.
Fire District No. 4's race is also very close, where challenger Brandon Turner leads incumbent Carol Paul 121-106, a 53.07% to 46.49% margin.
Incumbent Harrington school board member Cade Clarke trails challenger Justin Slack, a former city councilmember, 111-73 (60%-39.46%).
Other contested races aren't particularly close after first count. Joe Armand leads Denisa Holling 83-28, while incumbent Stephen Hardy leads Christopher Meats 85-22 in races for Harrington city council.
Sprague also is yielding some fascinating results, with Scooter Dearing ahead of current mayor John C. Eagleson 60-39 after first count in a race for city council. Current councilmember M. Shawn Coombs leads Sunnie Fortin 72-34 in the race for city mayor.
The seventh contested race in The Times' coverage area is in Cemetery District No. 7, where Joy Vold leads Thomas Pelley 118-45 for a commissioner spot.
Lincoln County voters appear to have soundly rejected three state advisory votes. Advisory vote No. 36, concerning a 988 behavioral health crisis response and suicide prevention tax on telephone lines for government spending, is being rejected 2,013 votes to 537. Advisory vote No. 37, which concerns a 7% tax in capital tax gains in excess of $250,000, is being voted down 2,272 votes to 382 by county voters. Advisory vote No. 38, which concerns a 2% premiums tax on captive insurers from owners and affiliates, is being repealed 2,173 votes to 453 in Lincoln County.
All three advisory votes are also receiving "repeal" majorities statewide. King and Jefferson County voters voted to maintain votes No. 36 and 38, while Jefferson County voters are also voting to maintain vote No. 37.
Here are all other local election results as of Tuesday's first count that aren't contested races. The next count is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 4 at 4 p.m.
