S.A.I.L. classes starting back up again in Odessa

ODESSA – Aging is associated with physical, psychological and social changes that impact functionality and independence, and predispose human beings to diseases and conditions that make them susceptible to death. One of these conditions is falls. Falls are a growing public health issue. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related hospitalizations and death among older adults and often result in loss of functionality, diminished socialization and a decrease in the quality of life.

Research has shown that exercise programs that incorporate aerobic, strength and balance exercises are effective in improving functionality, increasing independence and reducing the risks of falling. The Stay Active and Independent for Life (S.A.I.L.) program is a fall-prevention program focusing on strength, balance and overall fitness for adults 65 years of age and older. It is an evidence-based program, and the entire curriculum of activities in the S.A.I.L. program can help improve strength and balance when done regularly.

These classes are being offered through Odessa Memorial Healthcare Center’s Physical/Occupational Therapy Department at no cost to participants. Sign-ups, paperwork and assessments will be held Monday, November 22 at 1 p.m. at the Old Town Hall. Classes begin Monday, Nov. 29, at 1 p.m. and will be held Mondays and Thursdays at the Old Town Hall from 1 to 2 p.m. New participants are welcome at any time, and all exercises can be adapted and modified to accommodate all levels of physical fitness. For questions or more information, please contact Kelly Weber at the OMHC Therapy Department at 509-982-8100.
