Looking back...Thanksgiving edition

DAVENPORT—Thanksgiving, a time to spend with family and be thankful for life’s blessings while consuming a little too much food, is here. It’s also a holiday where people often reminisce about past happenings, memories and interactions while looking ahead to the future.

In that light, let’s look back at what was happening locally during the Thanksgiving holiday at various points throughout the past century.

Five years ago…2016

Locals looked forward to Davenport’s Annual Hometown Christmas, where Santa was anticipated for photos with children while a wheelbarrow filled with goodies was auctioned off to benefit the Lincoln County Care and Share and the Davenport Care Program. Hometown Christmas has been cancelled for 2021.

Two men were jailed following a series of thefts at three Morgan Street businesses. Justin David Grob of Somers Montana was held in Lincoln County Jail, while police believed at least five suspects were prowling the area.

Northwest Farm Credit Services provided grants to the Lincoln County Conservation District, Harrington PTA, Fire District No. 1 and Sprague Horizons Community.

Davenport Times editor Mark Smith expressed his gratitude for local medical staff following his cancer-free diagnosis.

Local basketball and wrestling athletes prepared to begin their winter sports seasons.

10 years ago…2011

Lincoln County Sheriff Wade Magers told Reardan mayor Sherman Johnson and three town councilmembers he could “phase in” an increase in what the department would charge the town for dispatching services in a meeting with county 911 coordinator Jo Borden and county commissioner Scott Hutsell.

Two sports utility vehicles collided head-on while traveling Highway 2 east of Davenport due to winter weather and slick conditions. Both drivers were taken to Lincoln Hospital to treat injuries.

Lincoln Hospital District asked for the public’s help to avoid federal cuts that they feared could jeopardize local health care.

Local attorneys Ken Carpenter, Rusty McGuire and Mark DeWulf concluded a partnership with Norm and Corey Brock while preparing to move their Davenport office down Morgan Street and hire a new attorney, John Kragt of Ritzville.

Brad Soliday, a 1990 Reardan High School graduate, was named the Regional Teacher of the Year for his work at Manson High School.

Odessa-Harrington football advanced to the 1B state semifinals with a convincing 76-36 victory over King’s Way Christian of Vancouver.

25 years ago…1996

A “steering committee” was formed to examine the direction of the struggling Davenport Chamber of Commerce. The committee included Richard Hayes, Sharon Thompson, Mike Leffel, Marti Montovani, Dixie Guhlke, Kevin Hansen, Dave Malet and Dean Anderson.

County engineer Bob Breshears told the Lincoln County Commissioners that the deceleration lane at the west-bound turnoff to the new Lincoln County transfer station was nearly complete.

County workers at the courthouse began to move offices as the building began to be re-opened following a courthouse arson fire in 1995.

The Davenport Lions Club raised over $4,000 at its annual Turkey Bingo to benefit various community projects, including Christmas decorations and lights.

Jim and Ann Reeves of Deep Creek shared their experience with narrowly surviving carbon monoxide poisoning.

Matthew Schrag of Davenport prepared to play the lead role in a performance of “Oliver.” Doug Teel of Harrington and Paula Steinolfson of Davenport played Mr. Bumble and Widow Corney.

50 years ago…1971

Parents of children in Davenport schools were warned of pending winter weather conditions that could inhibit future school activities.

The Davenport Civic League planned for Santa Claus to visit Davenport at the airport at the beginning of December.

Lincoln County undersheriff Larry Yount was photographed participating in a mock criminal investigation course set up in Memorial Hall as part of a criminal investigation course through Spokane Falls Community College.

Five Gorilla football players, including Jim Fisk, Joe Marriott, Terry Lust, Jeff Holderby and Roland Denson were named to the bi-county all-opponent football team. Joining them were six Reardan players, including Doug Anyan, Steve Broyles, Ross Stangland, Randy Knigge, Steve Telecky and Brian Falk.

Harrington High School students put on a production of “Don’t Drink the Water,” starring Terry Anderson, Mike Christianson, Jon Stafford, Renee Heimbigner and more.

A fire destroyed a barn and small building at O.E. Marh’s farm southwest of Reardan.

75 years ago…1946

10 inches of snow arrived in Lincoln County. Local businesses apparently thought this meant the start of Christmas, as holiday decorations began to spring up around town.

Ralph Elliot was appointed Western Division Chairman for Girls’ State Committee.

The Lincoln County Election Board certified local results.

Davenport Lions Club elected Dave Davis as new secretary to replace outgoing Gerald Tobiasen.

Davenport basketball dusted off Odessa 30-16 behind leading scorer Bob Buchanan.

100 years ago…1921

Two youths, Gilbert Johnson and Frank Hinton of Yakima, were arrested and charged with stealing $50 from George Turner Jr. of Harrington Hardware.

Hugh Montgomery, who was convicted of possessing liquor, said he was robbed of 24 whiskey cases in Daisy.

Davenport city council voted to arm the city marshal with a sawed off shotgun and gave him orders to take no chances with “yeggs caught breaking into Davenport business houses or homes, but to shoot to kill.”

County treasurer C.E. Ivy donated $1.90 to the city Christmas cheer fund after it was turned into his office by someone who found it on the dead body of a Patrick Sullivan.

Henry Scheel served time in county jail for operating a whiskey still at Crab Creek.

Over a foot of snow fell in Mondovi, paralyzing traffic…especially for cars.
