Spokane – The Washington Rural Initiative, a partnership between the Washington State University Extension and the AWB Institute with support from Avista and STCU, is a specialized training program designed to help rural residents build skills needed to become effective remote workers, as employees, entrepreneurs or freelancers.

The next class of students from Spokane, Whitman and Lincoln counties is enrolling now, and the program will start Jan. 4. The deadline for registration is December 29.

“The pandemic has demonstrated very clearly that not all work must be done from a centralized office. Some work can be done just as well by remote workers with a good broadband connection, provided they have some essential skills,” said Erika Borg, strategic adviser for the AWB Institute, the nonprofit affiliate of the Association of Washington Business. “This is not only creating new opportunities for rural residents but also bringing economic development opportunities to rural communities.”

The Washington Rural Initiative is based on the Master Remote Work Professional Certification program created by Utah State University Extension. Students learn how to improve time management, manage calendars and how to best use online communications tools as part of the work. The course also covers how to execute a successful job search. At the end of the nine-week course, participants receive a Remote Worker Certificate.

“The Remote Work Certificate program gave me the skills and the discipline to succeed in the virtual work environment,” said Lisa Baron-Warner, a recent graduate of the program.

The Association of Washington Business Institute, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, supports Washington employers in building a thriving and resilient economy. Its work focuses on advancing Washington in the Making, a long-term economic vision for the state that strives to achieve lasting prosperity in every community.
