Davenport girls surprise Reardan

Gorillas control last quarter for upset win

DAVENPORT-The "Golden Plunger" was won by Davenport over Reardan in last week's Winterfest competition, and that Gorilla success translated onto the basketball court. Davenport's girls basketball team surprised Reardan with a gritty, oft-ugly 38-33 comeback victory Saturday, Dec. 11.

Davenport didn't score for the first half of the first quarter as Reardan built a slim 5-0 lead. Reardan senior Ella Curry then banked in a jump shot at the quarter horn to give the visitors an 11-6 lead after one.

The Gorillas then put together a big 15-6 second quarter to take a 21-17 lead into halftime, but Reardan bounced back to retake the lead 26-23 with 3:05 left in the third quarter. The visitors led 31-27 going into the final period.

Neither team scored for five minutes in the fourth quarter until Davenport cut the lead to 33-30 with 2:27 remaining. Davenport junior Kiersten Kemmerer then tied the game with a three-pointer and eighth-grader Clare Lathrop cleaned up a Lena Waters missed layup to give Davenport a three-point lead with 25.6 seconds left.

"We made a couple shots and got in a rhythm," Davenport head coach Stacia Soliday said.

Reardan couldn't score on its ensuing possession, Davenport converted its free throws and the Gorillas had obtained their second straight victory after defeating Lind-Ritzville/Sprague the night before.

Lathrop had one of the best games of her young career, scoring 13 points and 10 rebounds while blocking five shots. Waters added seven points and seven rebounds, while eighth-grader Glenna Soliday had eight points and three steals.

"I think we have some more people confident enough to take some shots, and Clare has made quite a few," Stacia Soliday said.

Senior Ayden Krupke led Reardan with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists, but shot just 5-of-23 from the field. Senior Madi Dewey had six points and 10 rebounds, while Curry had four points and nine rebounds.

Davenport shot just 30% from the field, while Reardan was a mere 24%. Davenport committed 18 turnovers while Reardan had 14. Reardan was called for 24 fouls, while the Gorillas were called for just 10.

"Their zone defense was good and it was extended," Reardan head coach Bob Swannack said. "We were very gassed coming in today, and we weren't able to get in the seams like we're supposed to do offensively. We didn't share the ball particularly well, compared to what we normally do."

Reardan rebounded in its next matchup, a 45-21 victory over LRS Tuesday, Dec. 14. Dewey was the team's leading scorer with 11 points. Davenport, meanwhile, fell to Odessa 47-40 Tuesday night.

Davenport is now 2-4 this season, while Reardan is 3-3.

Davenport next hosts Northwest Christian (Colbert) at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 17 while Reardan hosts Almira-Coulee-Hartline at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18.
