DAVENPORT—A Yakima truck driver originally charged with second-degree assault stemming from an incident in May 2021 entered a guilty plea on an amended charge and won’t face jail time. Ernest Vern Windisch, age 62, pleaded guilty to one count of reckless endangerment in Lincoln County Superior Court Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Windisch was handed $700 in total fees but given zero days in jail after his guilty plea, according to court records.

The sentence stems from a prosecutor’s review of a report filed by Lincoln County Chief Criminal Deputy Kody Becker on May 28, 2021, in which Becker received eyewitness accounts of a semitruck driven by Windisch seemingly intentionally running a red Jeep off westbound Highway 2 a few miles east of Davenport.

Windisch was never formally arrested by Becker and has been making various court appearances for the past nine months.

Jacob Woock was the driver of the Jeep who originally flagged Becker down at Trader’s Cenex in Davenport, and his claims were supported by eyewitness Tyler Jones, according to Becker’s police report.

Windisch’s $700 in fees cover his filing fee and victim assessments, according to court documentation.
