Council adjusts sign rules

Digital sign can now be installed at Fairgrounds

DAVENPORT—After a brief discussion by the street committee prior to the regular meeting, city council approved a motion last Wednesday to adjust the city’s street ordinance and accommodate a request by Lincoln County Fairgrounds staff concerning the construction of a digital sign at the Fairgrounds.

Signs containing flashing, moving, intermittent or intense lights were previously banned in city limits. Now, the restriction is between Third and 13th Streets in the downtown Morgan Street core as the city maintains its opposition to digital signs near crosswalks that staff and council say could distract drivers in areas of pedestrians.

Dawn Canfield and Scott Hutsell, representing the Fairgrounds, had previously requested an ordinance change at council’s Feb. 23 meeting with hopes of constructing a digital readerboard nearly identical to the sign erected on Broadway Avenue in Reardan late last summer.

The motion passed unanimously and was council’s only action March 9. The next meeting is Wednesday, March 23 at 7 p.m.
