Davenport celebrates 37 graduates

DAVENPORT-An indoor graduation open to all members of the public for the first time since 2019 was a welcome sight on a rainy, windy day for locals looking to celebrate the 37-member Class of 2022 during a ceremony Saturday, June 4 in the high school gym.

Family members, friends and community members filled the bleachers and floor seats facing the stage set up on the north end of the gym, where the graduates proceeded at the start of the ceremony to the typical tune, "Pomp and Circumstance," performed by the Davenport High School band under Rob Harper's watchful eye.

Graduates proceeded in two rows behind junior escorts Evan Gunning and Lexi Cormier. Upon everyone taking the stage, Cody Jenkins led the crowd in the flag salute before Iralynn Wright offered the invocation.

A welcome was then offered by class president Hailey Nonnemacher-Stiles, which was followed by a "thank you" speech to the community by class treasurer Tate Nonnemacher-Foster.

Valedictorian Allison Jorden and salutatorian Kylee Buchanan were next to offer their remarks and thank their classmates, teachers and community members for years of support. Connor Boyer then read the Athenian Oath.

Outgoing superintendent Jim Kowalkowski thanked board members Deanna Fitzpatrick, Garrett Husky, Tami Odenrider and Janie Schreck before presenting incoming superintendent Chad Prewitt with a ceremonial book.

Prewitt then led a round of applause for outgoing staff members, including Kowalkowski, Tim Zeiler, Jill Freeze, Jean Parsons and Kristy Mielke.

Following a senior slide show, Prewitt presented each graduate with their hard-earned diploma. After the class was presented, graduates exited the stage to a standing ovation as the band played the Gorilla Fight Song.
