Davenport runs by Kettle Falls

Gorillas sitting in third place as districts approach

DAVENPORT-Like all Crusaders opponents, the Gorilla soccer team had no luck against undefeated Northwest Christian last Thursday, falling 2-0. Results got steadily better as the week went on, as Davenport tied Tonasket 2-2 last Saturday in a nonleague matchup before dusting off Kettle Falls 4-0 on Senior Night Tuesday, Oct. 18.

Freshman Glenna Soliday was involved in all four goals Tuesday. She assisted on the first score, finding fellow freshman Josie Wynecoop open in the box four minutes into the game.

Soliday then found the goal twice herself before halftime and Davenport led 3-0 at intermission.

The second half's lone goal was also scored by Soliday on a penalty kick with 7:38 remaining.

Davenport currently sits at 84-1 overall and 4-4 in NE2B play with two road matches left against Reardan and Upper Columbia Academy.

The Gorillas are likely to finish in third place in league play for the regular season, while Reardan will be battling Kettle Falls for an important fourth place position. The Bulldogs beat the Screaming Eagles 4-3 Saturday.

The top four teams in the NE2B advance to the league tournament, which begins Oct. 27. The first-place team (Northwest Christian) will host the four seed, while the two seed hosts the three seed. The winners will play for the league championship, while the losers will play in a third-place game, both of which are Nov. 1.

All four league tournament participants from District 7 will then advance to crossover matches with District 6's top four teams, which are currently Okanogan, Tonasket, Brewster and Bridgeport. Those crossover games will be Saturday, Nov. 5.

District 6 and District 7's top seeds will both advance to state and will play each other in a crossover matchup for state seeding.

Each district's No. 2 seed will host the other district's No. 4 seed, with winners advancing to state. Meanwhile, District 7's No. 3 seed will host District 6's No. 3 seed, also with a state berth at stake.

If the season ended today, Davenport would travel to St. George's to begin the league tournament, while Reardan would be on the outside looking in. The Screaming Eagles have an important Senior Night rematch with Kettle Falls Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 4 p.m.
