Senate, Congressional and judiciary races on state ballot

DAVENPORT—Much local interest in this year’s general election revolves around contested county races for Sheriff, Treasurer and Commissioner and a capital levy running in Reardan. However, races and measures with statewide and national impacts are also going before the voters in ballots that were mailed last week.

Ballots must be postmarked by 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Voters will choose between incumbent Democrat Patty Murray of Seattle and Republican challenger Tiffany Smiley of Pasco in a seat for U.S. Senate that Murray has held for 30 years.

Lincoln County voters far preferred Smiley in August’s primary election, but Murray carried the majority statewide.

Another longtime politician is seeking re-election in a race for 5th Congressional District Representative, this time on the Republican side. Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Kettle Falls is being challenged by Democrat Natasha Hill, a first-time candidate from Spokane.

Democrat Steve Hobbs of Lake Stevens and nonpartisan Julie Anderson of Tacoma are running for a two-year term in the Secretary of State race.

Voters will choose to either repeal or maintain two tax measures. The first raises aircraft fuel tax from 11 cents to 18 cents, while the second imposes premiums on “transportation network companies” to provide workers compensation to drivers.

Running uncontested for state representative seats are Mary Dye of Pomeroy and Joe Schmick of Colfax.

In Lincoln County, unopposed candidates include J Scott Liebing for Assessor, Adam Walser for Prosecuting Attorney, Dan B. Johnson for District Court Judge, Traci Gants for Clerk and Chandra Schumacher for Auditor.

Mary I. Yu, Barbara Madsen and G. Helen Whitener are running uncontested for state Supreme Court Justice positions.
