Hometown Christmas is back in town this year

Strate Funeral Home to sponsor tree lighting

DAVENPORT--It sounds like a broken record, but another popular event is back after a three-year hiatus.

This time, the event in question is Hometown Christmas, which is coming up in the city Saturday, Nov. 26...two days after Thanksgiving.

All the classic events are back, including pictures with Santa, a tree lighting, Christmas caroling and dinner.

Strate Funeral Home is sponsoring the tree lighting and candy canes Santa Clause will hand out to the eager youths (and youths at heart).

"We'll start caroling around 4:45 (p,.m)," Strate Funeral Home directior Dan Verheul said. "We'll probably leave the gazebo around 5:15."

In between the caroling and pictures with Santa is the usually-annual tree lighting at Pioneer Plaza, where free hot chocolate will be served around an open bonfire.

"We're going to hand out programs and sing 'Joy to the World,'" Verheul said. "Then we'll light the tree and sing 'Santa Clause is Coming to Town.'"

Santa will then indeed arrive on a fire truck and will be available for pictures in Memorial Hall, where dinner will be served by the Davenport Women's Association.

Verheul declined to comment on The Record-Times' attempts to reveal the identity of Santa Clause, noting such journalism could ruin the spirit of Christmas.
