Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!
DAVENPORT-Despite a strong fourth quarter, last Friday's girls basketball game against top-ranked Colfax showed the Gorillas still have a ways to go to reach the Bulldogs' level.
Then again, that much is true of most 2B girls teams, as evidenced in Colfax's 60-45 victory Jan. 13 that kept the Bulldogs perfect at 8-0 in league and 15-0 overall.
The Bulldogs took a quick 19-11 lead in the first quarter behind eight points from Brynn McGaughy and six points from Hailey Demler, then extended their lead to 40-18 by halftime.
McGaughy scored 20 points by intermission.
The Colfax onslaught continued in the third quarter, as the Bulldogs stretched their lead to 51-26.
"Our starters were dialed in. They set the tone," Colfax head coach Jordan Holmes said. "When they play like that and we build a lead that's as big as 30, I'm able to play some of our floaters and some of our bench kids that don't get a lot of minutes...I love that our starters don't mind winning by 15 as opposed to 35. They're allowing our bench to get experience as needed."
Davenport put together a very strong fourth quarter, outscoring Colfax by 10 points, but it was too little too late for the Gorillas. Davenport had a three-game winning streak snapped with the loss.
"They're older (and) they're more experienced, it appears," Davenport head coach Stacia Soliday said. "We did not get back on defense. We got beat by layups a few times when we were down already, so I think we need to get back earlier."
McGaughy led Colfax with 22 points and six rebounds, while Demler had 17 points to aide the Bulldogs. Emalie Jacoby led Davenport with 14 points, while Clare Lathrop added 10 points and six rebounds off the bench.
