REARDAN - Five students from the high school's Family, Career and Community Leaders of America program qualified to compete in the state competition following their success at a regional meet at Mead High School Monday, Jan. 16.

"FCCLA is an organization that promotes personal growth and leadership and helps its members to develop skills as productive members of society," advisor Barbara Hamilton said. "It focuses on family, which in our school means our community."

To qualify for the state event, participants had to show their knowledge, skills and abilities to identify an issue concerning families, careers or communities and develop a project to advocate for positive change. A three-person panel judged each presentation.

"All of them did an amazing job," Hamilton said. "Each project was well put together and well received."

Kassidy Koch made a presentation which focused on spreading awareness to her peers about mental health issues, and effective ways to cope with them.

"This project helped me develop leadership skills and get involved in my community," she said.

Kelsy Koch designed a reusable insulated shopping bag to show the importance of repurposing household items.

"My goal was to help others, and to help the environment with a high-quality product," Koch said.

Hannah Gralapp's presentation dealt with the importance of recycling and outlined ways in which the high school can improve its recycling efforts.

Reagan Board and Mackenzie Bjornberg teamed up on a project that provided financial help and support for two community members in need. They raised approximately $1,900 in support of families faced with financial hardship due to illness.

"This project made me realize that even the little things we do to help people can make a big impact," Board said.

Hamilton said in the next several weeks the students will refine their presentations before the state competition.

"My expectation at state is for each girl to do the very best and to be happy with their presentations," Hamilton said.

The FCCLA state competition will be in Wenatchee March 15-17.
