School, hospital and cemetery levies on ballot
DAVENPORT — All seven levy propositions placed before Lincoln County voters in a special election Tuesday, Feb. 14 were passing as of press time, most by comfortable margins.
A Sprague School District proposition for a replacement educational programs and operations levy with an estimated levy rate of $1.51 per $1,000 of assessed property value in 2024 and $1.43 per $1,000 of assessed property value in 2025 was passing 127-49. $215,000 will be collected from taxpayers both years.
The first of three levies run by the Odessa School District for replacement educational programs and operation expenses with an estimated levy rate of $1.86 per $1,000 of assessed property value in 2024 was passing 212-110. $600,000 will be collected from district taxpayers next year.
The second levy run by the Odessa School District for school improvements with an estimated levy rate of $0.37 per $1,000 of assessed property value in 2024 was passing 210-112. $125,000 will be collected from district taxpayers next year.
The third levy run by the Odessa School District to purchase a new bus with an estimated levy rate of $0.47 per $1,000 of assessed property value in 2024 was passing 207-119. $150,000 will be collected from district taxpayers next year.
A Lincoln Hospital District No. 1 operation and maintenance levy with an estimated levy rate of $2.36 per $1,000 of assessed property value in 2024 was passing 259-121. $703,119 will be collected from district taxpayers next year.
A Cemetery District No. 7 (Sprague/Edwall/Waukon area) levy for maintenance and operations with an estimated levy rate of $0.28 per $1,000 assessed property value in 2024 was passing 134-46. $35,000 will be collected from district taxpayers next year.
The closest vote was a three-year replacement capital levy for safety, efficiency and technology improvements run by the Wilbur School District. The estimated levy rate is $1.00 per $1,000 of assessed property value for 2024, 2025 and 2026.
That levy was narrowly passing 228-207 as of press time. If that result holds, $199,000 will be collected from district taxpayers each year between 2024-2026.
1,001 ballots had been counted as of press time. The Auditor’s Office reported this as a 38.65% voter turnout.
The special election results will be certified Friday, Feb. 24.
