School board hears facilities plan

15 projects discussed in presentation

DAVENPORT — The school board heard 15 proposed or planned facilities-related items during a presentation from facilities director Brian Telford and assistant plant operations, facilities and grounds director J.J. Kowalkowski at the board’s regular meeting Monday, Feb. 27.

District controls were the first item discussed. Telford said the district’s current contract with ATS has expired.

He shared quotes from ATS and Control Solutions NW for future board consideration.

The Pathways program hopes to transform the red and white football shed outside the elementary school into a workshop area and build a separate shed for football equipment. Telford noted that sprinklers would need to be re-routed and heating would have to be installed in the shed for this to become a reality.

Telford also discussed new welding stations in the metal shop and fencing around the portable classrooms outside the elementary school.

Every summer, staff resurfaces the high school gym floor. Telford and the board discussed the possibilities of changing the volleyball and basketball lines, which haven’t been updated in years.

Telford said he received two quotes for replacing the high school roof and all vents Wednesday, Feb. 22. Half the roof was quoted at $24,400 and the entire was quoted at $51,000.

Superintendent Chad Prewitt and Telford noted that funding the roof and the timeline for the project is partially dependent on whether the state provides grant funding for such endeavors.

Fascia on the south side of the high school gym needs replacement due to rot and fading color, while Telford noted the soffit is sagging in some areas.

Other projects discussed include:

• Replacing lightbulbs with more energy-efficient lights.

• Making sure water is clean for required inspection of lead and copper, which Kowalkowski said he doesn’t expect to be found in the district’s water.

• Mounting four monitors in the high school library.

• Upgrading parking on Eighth Street, where buses are presently unable to open doors without hitting the curb due to sinking street levels. The same issue is present in a smaller capacity outside the west side of the high school gym.

• Sealing a crack in the middle of the tennis court.

• Repairing cracks in the blacktop asphalt outside the football field and elementary school.

• Replacing exterior benches outside the elementary school.

• Eventually replacing high school boilers, pipes and heat pumps.

In other business, the board approved a tennis co-op program with the Reardan-Edwall School District and tabled a motion to purchase a new John Deere tractor until more quotes were obtained.

During the consent agenda approval, the board OK’d Lindsey Kruger as head high school softball coach, Lance Strite as assistant high school baseball coach and Stephanie Linstrum as assistant middle school softball coach.
