Davenport freshman Clare Lathrop turns in the post against Raymond. The Gorillas fell to the Seagulls 50-42 in the opening round of the 2B state tournament at W.F. West High School on Saturday, Feb. 25.

CHEHALIS - The Davenport girls fought and clawed their way to the program's first state tournament berth in four years by scraping out a fifth-place finish in the District 7 2B Tournament and upsetting Lake Roosevelt in the District 6/7 Crossover.

But the streak ended in the opening round of the 2B Girls State Tournament, as the Gorillas fell to the Raymond Seagulls 50-42 at W.F. West High School Saturday, Feb. 25.

The loss ended Davenport's season with a 16-10 record. The Gorillas went into State as the No. 13-seeded 2B team.

The Gorillas jumped out to a quick start, using quick passes and high energy levels to take a 16-9 lead after the first quarter. But Raymond flipped the script in the second quarter, outscoring Davenport 16-3 in the period to build an advantage the visitors couldn't overcome.

"Early on, we were passing...pretty energetic," Davenport head coach Stacia Soliday said. "They did switch to a zone and started pressing. Then we didn't do as well."

Davenport managed to outscore Raymond 14-13 in the quarter to make the deficit 36-33 after three quarters, setting up what looked to be yet another down-to-the-wire finish. This time, though, Raymond built an eight-point lead by the final two minutes to hold on.

"They weren't unbeatable, but they were good enough to where our turnovers can't happen," Soliday said.

Davenport battled short-handed. Senior Lena Waters missed her second straight game with a concussion, while Addie Schneider was limited with an illness, forcing Soliday to play six players for most of the game.

"We didn't have a lot of depth," Soliday said.

Freshman post Clare Lathrop had another decent game for Davenport, scoring a team-high 17 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Eighth-grader Emalie Jacoby added 12 points and eight rebounds.

But Davenport committed 29 turnovers against Raymond's defense, which helped the Seagulls overcome a 34% shooting percentage from the field. The Gorillas hit 4 of 13 free throws, while Raymond knocked down 14 of 20 attempts.

Raymond was led by Karsyn Freeman's 18 points. Megan Kongbouakhay added 10 points for the Seagulls.

Davenport will now look ahead to next year, when it expects to return all but two players.

"Next year will still be a building year," Soliday said. "It helps that we have a class that will have played three varsity years together."
