Prescribed burning possible at Gifford

GIFFORD—Lake Roosevelt National Recreation Area may implement a prescribed fire this spring on 67 acres adjacent to the Gifford Campground and Boat Launch.

The campground is located north of Lincoln County on Stevens County across from Inchelium and can be asked via travel on Highway 25.

A press release said the goal of prescribed burns include promoting forest health and decreasing forest fuel loads adjacent to campgrounds and structures.

The burn would be ignited in conjunction with the Department of Natural Resources, the release said.

Residual smoke is possible for up to two weeks post-burn, which could occur between April and early June. Burns would take 1-2 days, the release said.

Other benefits of a burn would include natural reseeding of trees, retaining plants and trees more resistant to fire, reduced small fuels, decreased risk of uncontrolled wildfires and increased nutrients for trees and understory.

Gifford isn’t the only campground on Lake Roosevelt. Campgrounds in Lincoln County include Fort Spokane, Porcupine Bay, Spring Canyon, Jones Bay and Hawk Creek.
