Jacoby resigns as school safety officer

Cites “harassment received” as reason for departure

DAVENPORT — School safety officer Mike Jacoby resigned his position with the school district last week. Jacoby submitted a letter of resignation Thursday, April 20 that was approved by the school board at a regular meeting Monday, April 24.

When asked for comment about his departure, Jacoby pointed to his letter of resignation.

“The reason for my resignation comes from harassment received after taking measures to protect my child,” Jacoby wrote, referencing an ongoing issue between his child and another student that resulted in a protection order being filed in Lincoln County Superior Court. “I feel that I can protect the rights of my child by being her father, and not by being employed in this way by the school.”

Jacoby, who was hired as school safety officer in Sept. 2022, wrote that his resignation would allow the other student a fairer chance at an equal education, without Jacoby’s presence in the school. He also voiced his concerns with the district’s handling of said situation.

“My family moved to Davenport in hopes of a good and safe education as well as careers,” he wrote. “However, at this point we are looking at the option of other school districts to allow our kids a safe and successful education. Thank you for the opportunity to serve the amazing teachers and children. I will truly miss them.”

Superintendent Chad Prewitt said the school board will hold an executive session Thursday, April 27 to discuss Jacoby’s concerns before offering a public response.

“The district does not believe it is appropriate to discuss personnel matters,” Prewitt said in an email. “We respect Mr. Jacoby’s privacy as he is still our employee, as a coach.”
