Council hints opposition to Logan Street vacation

Request made for parcels near First Street

DAVENPORT — City councilmembers indicated their opposition to a request from Mark and Kim Elwood to vacate a portion of Logan Street from the easterly right of way line of First Street to the westerly line of State Highway 25 in the Columbia Addition during a regular meeting Wednesday, June 14.

However, during a first reading council indicated it would vote in favor of another Elwood request, vacating two parcels for property consolidation: Lot 9, Block 89 of the Columbia Addition and Lot 8, Block 89 of the Columbia Addition just south of the Black Bear Motel.

“I don’t think I’m in favor of vacating Logan Street,” councilman Johnathan Chapman said during a finance committee meeting that proceeded council’s meeting.

City administrator Steve Goemmel said council had the option to vacate all of Logan Street, grant a partial vacation or deny the request altogether.

“I don’t think I want to give up Logan Street,” councilman Cory Hollis said, indicating his agreement with Chapman to keep the portion under city ownership.

Mark Elwood attended the regular meeting and was asked by councilman Patrick Katz why he wanted the Logan Street vacation.

Elwood said potential buyers of land he and Kim Elwood already own, including the Black Bear Motel, have indicated to him the land is more appealing with control of Logan Street.

“I don’t think I want to sell Logan Street just for a property sale,” Katz responded.

Council agreed to a $1 per square foot vacation of the two parcels in the Columbia Addition.

A formal vote on both vacation requests will be Wednesday, June 28, Mayor Brad Sweet said at council’s meeting.
