Davenport cyclist killed in crash

SPOKANE — A young Davenport man was killed after colliding with a semitruck while bicycling on State Highway 206 Thursday, July 20.

19-year-old Kenneth S. Brandenburg was pronounced deceased at the scene after crashing into a white 2019 Peterbilt truck driven by Jonathan M. Fron of Spokane Valley near North Newport Highway, State Highway 206 and North Market Street, according to a Washington State Patrol press release.

According to the release, Brandenburg crashed into the truck on its passenger side while bicycling eastbound on State Highway 206 after the truck turned right onto State Highway 206 from a private lot.

Uninjured, Fron continued driving the truck and returned to the scene later, according to the release.

The official cause of the crash, which occurred three miles north of Spokane city limits, remains under investigation. No charges appeared to have been filed in Spokane County courts by press time.

Brandenburg, the son of Renee Eggleston, was a 2023 graduate of Davenport’s Pathways program and had moved to Mead in recent months to live with his great-grandmother, family friend LaVon Stiles said.

“He was super kind and loving, and a lot of teenagers aren’t,” Stiles said. “Because of him, he asked his teacher if they could do a service project for the museum.”

“He came up and gave me a hug in front of his entire class. That’s super rare.”

He spent two years working at Trader’s Express in Davenport and enjoyed photography and gaming.

“He was very interested in pursuing culinary arts and electronics and hardware repair,” Pathways director Jennifer Hargrave said. “When he came to Pathways, he just took off. Being able to pursue his talents…he became a leader in the program.”

Eggleston described her son as someone who was “loved by all.”

“Everybody he met, he put a smile,” Eggleston said. “He wanted to hug, and make you smile…when he went to work at Yoke’s in Mead, he said ‘I’m not ready till I put my smile on.’” “He touched so many lives.”

A memorial service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, July 29 at Davenport High School.
