FBLA Competes at National Leadership Conference

DAVENPORT - Seven members of the High School FBLA chapter spent June 25 – July 1 in Atlanta, to connect with top future business leaders and showcase their talents as future business leaders at the FBLA National Leadership Conference.

The members competed in a variety of events against more than 12,000 FBLA members from across the United States.

The team of Zackary Bruce, Samantha Odenrider and Josie Wynecoop placed 9th at Nationals in American Enterprise Project against 90 other chapters. The group developed a formal report which showcased "Tomorrow's Business Leaders" which involved the Davenport Middle School sixth-grade class.

The report included information about the lessons that the co-chairs developed to teach the sixth graders about the American Enterprise System. It included interviews with the following local American Enterprise businesses: Some Like It Hot! Espresso, Kysar Mechanical, Davenport Good Neighbor Pharmacy, Sage Marketplace, Jason Raugust Counseling, Davenport Retirement Village and Gunner's Bison Ranch.

After the base knowledge of the American Enterprise system and the interviews were conducted, the sixth graders got to create their own "small business" and had a business fair which included "customers" who were over 150 elementary students.

The team of Faith Bell, Rikkiana Chavelas and McCall Knopp competed in Partnership with Business with the title "Gorillas Go Social." This group partnered with Some Like it Hot! Espresso.

The partnership's goals were to increase social media activity with high school aged individuals, to run a social media campaign (which resulted in an increase of high school aged social media activity and increase of knowledge about Some Like it Hot! Espresso) and to build a connection between Some Like it Hot! Espresso and Davenport High School.

Through the partnership, FBLA members and high school students had the opportunity to participate in the "Gorillas Go Social" social media campaign, where they could have entries into a raffle by participating in the various social media posts, trivia, class competition and purchasing drinks from Some Like it Hot! Espresso.

Ryan Utley competed in E-Business. He researched and developed a website for a winter sports gear store. He spent countless hours creating a website for "Rainier Gear."

Bruce competed in Sales Presentation. He had to persuade his judges to buy the product he was selling through a live demonstration.

Members not only had the opportunity to experience competition at the national level but were able to enhance their business skills through networking with other FBLA members from throughout the U.S. and around the world, learn from motivational speakers and watch various competitive events to learn what others are doing.

The group also explored around Atlanta, where they thoroughly enjoyed the sites. The chapter participated in 'State Day' at Six Flags and dinner at Dave and Busters.

The group visited and toured the College Football Hall of Fame, World of Coca Cola, Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial and Historical Center, Fernbank Museum and Stone Mountain.
