Crews extinguish large fire

50 acres burn near Kloster and Rocklyn

HARRINGTON - The largest Lincoln County fire in the last week was controlled by local crews from Fire District No. 6 and No. 5. A roughly 50-acre blaze near Kloster and Rocklyn Roads was knocked down by area firefighters late Wednesday, Aug. 2.

District No. 6 commissioner Ron Mielke said the fire started on a combine draper and burned east toward Rocklyn. It mostly burned through stubble and Conservation Reserve Program land, with no wheat succumbing to the flames.

Rocklyn Road was closed as the flames approached the roadway.

"The flames were really high next to the roadway," Mielke said. "It was scary for a few seconds."

District No. 6 sent two tenders and four brush trucks to fight the blaze, while District No. 5 sent two tenders of its own. Dept. of Natural Resources crews were paged but called off as local crews knocked down the flames on their own.

A lightning storm that hit much of the county Monday, Aug. 7 sparked concern, but no large blazes. Odessa crews responded to a power pole fire north of town on Rimrock Road, while Davenport crews received reports of smoke plumes on Indian Creek Road.

According to scanner traffic, nothing was found on the Indian Creek call that was reported about two miles off Hawk Creek Road.

And in Edwall, a hay baler caught fire Monday, but farmers had the flames mostly extinguished before firefighters arrived.
