Odessa thrashes Waterville in season opener

WATERVILLE—It was a new head coach, but a familiar result for the Odessa football team in the Tigers’ season opener in Douglas County. The Tigers traveled to Waterville and pulled away from the Shockers 68-22 on a hot afternoon Saturday, Sept. 2.

The win was the first for rookie head coach Joe Schlomer, who took over the job after Jeff Nelson retired from the gig after last season.

“It went well, but it was so hot,” Schlomer said. “I played everybody on the sidelines because of the heat, which if you ask me, is a great thing.”

Odessa used a size and quickness advantage to pound the rock against Waterville-Mansfield. Corbyn Neilsen led the charge with 234 rushing yards, 84 receiving yards and four total touchdowns.

Chad Strebeck added 79 rushing yards and two scores.

As a team, Odessa ran for 349 yards in 49 attempts.

Quarterback Zane McMillan completed five of his 10 passing attempts for 112 yards and two touchdowns, while Sean Devore was 5-for-6 through the air for 57 yards and a score.

Defensively, Dakota Steward led the charge with 4.5 tackles and two interceptions. Tucker Walter had six total tackles for the Tigers.

“For our first game, we still have a lot to work on,” Schlomer said. “It was better in the second half than it was in the first half.”

Odessa will look to start its season 2-0 in its home opener against Oroville at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 8. The Hornets lost their opener to Almira-Coulee-Hartline 50-18 Friday, Sept. 1.
