Odessa tops Wellpinit

ODESSA - It's been somewhat of an up-and-down season for the Tigers' volleyball team, but the squad was able to wrap up the regular season with a straight sets victory over Wellpinit to finish with an 8-8 record Saturday, Oct. 28.

Odessa topped its visitors convincingly 25-10, 25-13, 25-16.

The Tigers started strong and stayed strong, quickly leading 6-1 in the first set before a 25-10 victory. Odessa then scored the first 12 points of the second set before playing back and forth with Wellpinit en route to a 25-13 set victory.

"(We) were making our serves and hitting it hard from the beginning," Odessa senior Melloney Deife said.

Wellpinit scored the first four points of the third and final set, but Odessa flipped the script to take a 10-5 lead. The visitors weren't done putting up a fight, trimming the deficit to 15-13 before the Tigers managed to pull away for a 25-16 victory.

"Our attacking was spot on tonight because of our setting," Odessa head coach Susie Deife said. "We attacked well at the net. Everybody did."

Seniors led the way for Odessa. Deife notched 24 assists, nine aces and nine digs while Hayden Schuh tacked on 14 kills.

The Tigers now begin postseason play in the District 7 1B Tournament in Coulee City Thursday, Nov. 2. Odessa takes on Inchelium at 2 p.m. and will play again either at 5 p.m. or 6:15 p.m. depending on match outcome.

"(We need to be) working together as a team and making sure that we have fun," Schuh said.

If Odessa can survive at least one match, it will advance to the final day of district play in Wellpinit Saturday, Nov. 4. The top four finishers at Districts advance to state.
