Gorilla grapplers take to Colfax

DAVENPORT—The Gorillas’ wrestling teams were both in Colfax for their first official competition Saturday, Dec. 2.

As a team, Davenport went 11-5 against wrestlers from the host Bulldogs, Dayton-Waitsburg, Garfield-Palouse, Lake Roosevelt, Northwest Christian and Selkirk. Weight classes weren’t kept, head coach Jesse Hoff said.

The Gorillas were led by captains Brody Schillinger and Brock Gustaveson, two state meet hopefuls who went undefeated on the day.

In their first action under new head coach Hoff, Noah Everett got two wins, while Wayland and Solomon Holberg also picked up victories.

“Every kid was able to get at least one win,” Hoff said. “We have a young team and they are hungry to get better. I think they did a great job at that.”

Davenport’s two girls, Emma Cash and Alyssa Kruger, were two of three total females at the double dual. Cash and Kruger each wrestled Grace Jones of Colfax.

“Both girls battled hard but came up short in the end,” Hoff said. “Really happy with their effort and I think if they keep working hard they could flip that result by the end of the year.”

Davenport’s boys and girls are both in Spangle for the Liberty Tournament Saturday, with matches starting at 10 a.m. Dec. 9.
