Jacobsen leads Gorillas past Reardan

DAVENPORT - The Reardan boys basketball team was keen on snapping a two-game losing streak and ensuring that the rival Davenport boys would remain winless this season.

Jaeger Jacobsen had other ideas. The senior poured in 31 points and snared 12 rebounds to boot as the Gorillas got their first win of the season in a WinterFest dub over the Screaming Eagles 53-50 Tuesday, Dec. 12.

Jacobsen had somewhat struggled from the field in early season losses to Northwest Christian and Kettle Falls last weekend. That was evident to not be the case after he scored seven first quarter points against Reardan as Davenport built a 14-10 lead.

"He's been a little frustrated because that didn't happen earlier," Davenport head coach Matt Henry said. "It was nice to see that he was able to fill that role (of leading scorer) that he carved out for himself and earned."

The two rivals played a mostly even second quarter, and Davenport led 27-22 at halftime while the "Golden Plunger" was passed back to the Gorilla student section for their WinterFest week victory, marking the third straight year the Plunger was won by the host school.

In the second half, Reardan couldn't find an answer for Jacobsen, whose step back corner three gave him 31 points and Davenport a 53-41 lead with 3:13 left.

"I was scoring in that first half, but in the second half it just clicked three-point wise," Jacobsen said.

It turned out to be the game winning shot, as Reardan scored nine straight points to end the game but ran out of time to try and tie or take the lead.

Reardan head coach Jake Green shouldered the blame for the defeat, saying he could have prepared the Screaming Eagles to better defend Jacobsen and find offensive consistency.

"There are things that we're working on, and I have to be better at us getting those things down," Green said. "We're trying to give freedom, but we're just indecisive right now, and again, that's on me."

The Screaming Eagles were led in scoring by Maveric Sobotta's 14 points and Rysen Soliday's 11.

Maddox Schumacher scored 13 huge points for Davenport.

The Gorillas improved to 1-2 with the win, while Reardan has now lost three straight games to Kettle Falls, St. George's and Davenport since its season opening victory over Deer Park.

"It's always a big win, especially when you got a bunch of new guys that are new to varsity basketball," Henry said. "It's always a shock to the system when you play those first couple games and we didn't have any easy ones."

Davenport is at St. George's and Chewelah this Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.

The Screaming Eagles host Chewelah at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15 and Northwest Christian at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16.
