Odessa boys win two straight

Tigers clip Chesterton, top WCK

LIBERTY LAKE - The Odessa boys basketball team got a 2-point win against Chesterton Academy last Friday, Dec. 8, but the 69-67 eek didn't leave a good taste in new head coach Mike Carlquist's mouth.

"We didn't play very well," Carlquist said. "They shot really well."

Carlquist surely preferred the play of Odessa against the rival Wilbur-Creston-Keller Wildcats Saturday, Dec. 9. The Tigers traveled for the second straight night to get a 62-56 overtime victory and improve to 3-1 this season.

In the Chesterton Academy game played at the HUB Sports Center while youth YMCA games surrounded the "arena" on neighboring courts, Odessa found an advantage inside with the size of Dakota Steward but struggled to pull away.

In fact, the Knights built a 21-14 lead, forcing Odessa to go on a 21-13 streak in the second quarter to hold onto a 35-34 halftime lead.

Odessa grew its lead to as many as eight in the second half, but missed free throws kept the Knights close. The Tigers eventually held on by the skin of their teeth.

"We make some free throws, we win by eight," Carlquist said. "They're better than they've been."

The seniors came to play against WCK. After the Wildcats built a slim 32-30 halftime advantage, Odessa fought back with a 22-20 second half.

That sent the game to overtime with a 52-52 tie, wherein Odessa outscored WCK for its second straight win.

Jacob Scrupps poured in 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Odessa, while Dakota Steward added 17 points and 16 rebounds. Kalub Dreger led WCK with 20 points.

Odessa has two straight home games this weekend. The Tigers host Mary Walker at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15 and Almira/Coulee-Hartline at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16.
