Odessa girls split two games

Tigers top Chesterton, fall to WCK

LIBERTY LAKE -The Odessa girls basketball team had enough firepower to top Chesterton Academy despite missing senior Melloney Deife last weekend, but the Tigers didn't have the firepower to overcome the attack of the rival Wilbur-Creston-Keller Wildcats a day later.

Odessa pulled away from the Knights 55-35 Friday, Dec. 8 and fell to WCK 48-33 Saturday, Dec. 9.

The Tigers entered their game in the HUB Sports Center 1-1 and were met with a challenge from the typically last-place Chesterton Knights. Odessa led 13-10 after a quarter, 25-22 at halftime and 39-33 after the third quarter.

It wasn't until the fourth quarter when the Tigers pulled away, outscoring the Knights 16-2 for a 20-point victory.

"We changed some things offensively and moved some people to where I felt like they're going to be successful," Odessa head coach Travis Schuh said. "Once we figured out how to break their pressure things got easier."

Hayden Schuh led Odessa with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Leah Claassen added 11 points and eight rebounds. Mackenzie Lutz had nine points and 16 rebounds for Odessa.

Annelise Curran scored most of Chesterton's points, pouring in 27.

Odessa didn't have the juice to match up with potentially-statebound WCK. The Tigers hung around for a half, and the Wildcats led 26-20 at intermission.

But a 14-2 third quarter from WCK dug too deep a hole for Odessa en route to a 15-point loss for the Tigers, who are now 2-2 this season.

Odessa hosts a pair this weekend. First up is a date with Mary Walker at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15, then Almira/Coulee-Hartline is in town at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16.
