Tigers lose despite Scrupps' big game

Odessa takes first Christmas game

ODESSA - In an epic battle, the Tigers' Jacob Scrupps outscored Almira/Coulee-Hartline's Josh Booker 27 points to 26 points in the schools' NE1B matchup Saturday, Dec. 16. But after Booker's last-second shot, the Warriors walked off the court with a 52-50 victory.

Early in the game, ACH showed a strong inside game and accurate outside shooting as it jumped to a 19-8 lead in what looked to be an easy win. Booker paced his team with seven points in the quarter.

Odessa outscored ACH 17-6 in the second quarter. Scrupps showed his intent to take over the game by out-quicking his defender with spinning drives to the bucket and by pulling up for long jump shots.

At the end of the first half, he shot the ball from near mid court as the buzzer sounded. The ball bounced above the rim, bounced again, and then dropped through the hoop to tie the game at 25 apiece.

Scrupps finished the half with 12 points, followed by teammate Dakota Steward, who had eight points. Booker had 10 first half points for ACH.

In the second half, Scrupps and Booker traded baskets. After trailing the Warriors, 50-47 with 1:12 remaining in the game, ACH's Steward converted a traditional 3-point play to tie the score at 50.

The basket gave Steward 15 points for the game.

Neither team scored on its next possession.

With four seconds remaining, Booker rebounded a missed teammate's shot and laid it in to give ACH the 52-50 win.

Scrupps scored 16 points in the second half to Booker's 15.

"It was a good game, but we didn't get a lot of points from Corbyn Neilson, one of our better players," Odessa head coach Mike Carlquist said. "Both teams fought hard."

The loss dropped Odessa to 3-3 on the season. ACH improved to 2-3.

Odessa had much better luck in the first game of the Moses Lake Christian Academy Tournament Tuesday, Dec. 19. The Tigers thrashed Entiat 77-46 and were playing the host Lions in a game that occurred after press time Wednesday, Dec. 20.

The Tigers next game will be at home against Wellpinit Friday, Jan. 5.
