Davenport boys compete in Warden

Gustaveson wins class again

WARDEN — The Davenport boys wrestlers were at the Jeremiah Schmunk Invitational to grapple against 16 other schools from around the state and Pacific Northwest Saturday, Jan. 6. The Gorillas finished eighth as a team with 75 points, ahead of ninth-Colfax and behind seventh-place Kittitas. Tonasket edged out St. Maries of Idaho with 237.5 team points to win the Invitational, while host Warden finished fourth.

Individually, Brock Gustaveson once again won the 190-pound class. Gustaveson pinned River View’s Trell Miles in 0:57, Othello’s Miguel Zuniga in 4:00, Liberty’s Reed Whidman in 4:42 and St. Maries’ Trey Gibson in 2:31 for the class title.

The 190-pounder has been Davenport’s best wrestler this year, with a record of 20-1.

Other point scorers included senior Brody Schillinger, who finished third at 165 pounds. Schillinger pinned Tonasket’s Gabe Ray in 3:08, but lost to Othello’s Parker Freeman 7-5. He then pinned Moses Lake’s Jesus Garcia in 2:50 and defeated St. Maries’ Kieson Watts 14-4.

Schillinger is 17-4 this season, the second-best mark on the tean.

Wayland Holmberg also placed third. At 120 points, Holmberg pinned Wahluke’s Leandro Bucio in 1:10 and Southridge’s Chase Sanchez in 1:15.

Holmberg was then pinned by Moses Lake’s Duane Zamora in 5:34 before pinning Othello’s Emmanuel Ayala Jr. in 1:59 and St. Maries’ Beau Wentzel in 0:49.

Holmberg is 17-6 this season,

Brendon Peters-Biggs pinned Southridge’s Kaleb Priest in 2:42, then was pinned by Liberty’s Ren Wakai in 1:10 and Othello’s Marcos Zuniga in 3:36.

Peters-Biggs, a senior, is 7-6 so far this season for the Gorillas.

In other Gorilla wrestling:

Landyn Murphy was pinned by Zamora in 1:57 and Warden’s Kolby Klueber in 0:38 at 120 pounds.

Noah Everett was pinned by Colfax’s Chase Phillips and was defeated by Sanchez 6-2, also at 120 pounds.

Everett, a senior, is 2-11 so far this season.

Damon Dolhay was pinned by Warden’s Manny Canales and Moses Lake’s Jonathan Acevedo in 2:49 at 126 pounds.

At 157 pounds, Gabriel Carey was pinned by St. Maries’ Kelton Allman in 5:10 and Southridge’s Tayven Bingham in 3:41.

Carey is 4-5 overall so far this wrestling season,

At 165 pounds, Solomon Holmberg was pinned by Jesus Garcia of Moses Lake in 3:11 and Gabe Ray of Tonasket in 2:13.

Holmberg is 8-8 so far this season,

And at 190 pounds, Carl Medhaug was pinned by Zuniga in 1:56 before pinning River View’s Trell Miles in 1:00. Medhaug was then pinned by Columbia (Burbank)’s Tyler Sloan in 1:42.

Medhaug is 1-10 so far this season.

Davenport’s girls didn’t compete.

Both the boys and the girls are scheduled to grapple at the Tonasket Apple Pie Invite at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13.

The girls will be at a league meet in Deer Park at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16. The boys are in Reardan Thursday, Jan. 18.
