Reardan grapples in Cheney

CHENEY–The Reardan wrestling team scored 83 points to place 14th out of 18 teams at the Blackhawk Invite Saturday, Jan. 6. Carson Kline was the Screaming Eagles' top scorer with his third place finish in the 138 pound weight class.

In the 138 pound weight class, Kline went 4-1 in his matches to pick up a third place medal. In his first two matches, he pinned Adolfo Duran from Cheney in 27 seconds and Kale Creekmore from Lewis and Clark in 29 seconds. Kline lost his semi-final match to Ben Orth of Lakeside before finishing his day with pins over Praithan Borja of Lakeside (1:29) and Gus Ballman of Rogers (0:29).

Wapato won the meet with 227 points.

Joey Matusik won three of his five matches to place fourth in the 106-pound weight class. In his first match, he pinned Elemer Gomez of Wapato in 39 seconds. In his quarterfinal match, he lost by decision to Abraham Noriega of Kennewick. In his two consolation round matches Matusik pinned Alex Kurakin of Cheney and defeated Lucas Horner from Shadle Park by decision.

In his last match of the day, Matusik was defeated by Braxton Reyes from Lakeside in the battle for third place.

Coen Caldwell, competing at 144 pounds, went 3-2 in his matches. In the first round he pinned Leo Volpe of Shadle Park in 1:35.

In his second match, Caldwell was pinned by Shadrach Mason of Cheney. He pinned Anthony Pleasant of Cheney (:55) and Brendan Simmons of Mead (1:26), before falling to Denzel Ekholm in his last match via decision.

H.K. Bird, wrestling at 150 pounds, lost his two matches to Diago Diaz of Quincy and Christian Macias of Wapato.

Sterling McLaughlin went 3-2 in his matches to place fifth in the 190-pound weight class. In his first match, he pinned Alejandro Barajas of Quincy in 0:31. He lost his second match to James Evans of Lewis and Clark before bouncing back to pin Gauge Seubert of Cheney (2:31). McLaughlin split his last two matches. He was pinned by Jaden Lopez of Kennewick and won his rematch against Evans by forfeit.

Carson Durbin went 3-2 in his matches for fifth place in the 220-pound weight class. He split his first two matches, pinning Vincent Ordaz of Riverside (2:31) and losing to Austin Frederick of Mead. Durbin won his third match by decision over Charley Tonasket of Shadle Park.

In round four Durbin was defeated by Angel Leyva of Wapato. He finished the day pinning Conner Schwab of Eastmont in 2:38.

The Screaming Eagles' next action will be at the Apple Pie Invite in Tonasket Saturday, Jan. 13.
