Girls, boys fall convincingly to Bulldogs
COLFAX - The Bulldogs took on the Reardan Screaming Eagles for a matchup of the top two teams in the NE2B standings and proved why they're the cream of the crop in District 7 so far with a 53-29 victory Friday, Jan. 12.
The Reardan boys didn't fare much better, falling to the undefeated Bulldogs 80-53.
The Reardan girls came into the game with a 5-0 district record, while the Bulldogs had a district record of 6-0.
Colfax held Reardan to eight points or less in each of the four quarters in the game.
The first quarter was a 15-7 advantage for Colfax.
Brynn McGaughy had eight points, four rebounds and a block in the first eight minutes of the game. Hailey Demler added five points and three rebounds.
For the Screaming Eagles, Mackenzie Bjornberg had four of the seven Reardan points in the first quarter.
During the second quarter the Bulldogs scored 12 points in the quarter and held the Screaming Eagles to six points. McGaughy had seven points and three rebounds as Colfax took a 27-13 lead into halftime.
Reardan scored six points in the second, four of which came from Rylynn Green.
After the break, the Screaming Eagles would score eight points in the third quarter, their highest scoring quarter in the game so far, led by four from Tenice Waters.
Colfax would score just 11, led by five from Demler to take a 17-point lead into the fourth.
In the final quarter the Bulldogs would match their first quarter with 15 points. Demler and McGaughy both had six in the quarter.
Colfax held Reardan to eight points in the fourth quarter as well to take the 24-point victory.
McGaughy finished the game with a 22-point, 11-rebound double-double. Demler finished with 17 points and seven rebounds with three steals and assists.
Demler and McGaughy scored 39 of the Bulldogs 53 points, outscoring Reardan by themselves.
Brenna Gilchrist finished with just two points for the Bulldogs, but had nine rebounds, eight assists, and two steals.
For the Screaming Eagles, Waters led the way with 13 points. She made six free-throws in the game.
Green finished the game with eight points, and Bjornberg had five.
"We came out and shot the ball poorly and didn't get any easy buckets from our press like normal," Reardan head coach Bob Swannack said. "After the game, my youth defined the issue with being a little scared to face a 6'3" DI prospect. These are great moments for us."
The next game for the Screaming Eagles will be played on Friday, Jan. 19, when they take on the Liberty (Spangle) Lancers. The game will be played in Reardan, with the game set to tip-off at 6 p.m.
On the boys side, Colfax routed the Screaming Eagles to stay perfect on the year after their 80-53 victory. Reardan dropped to 4-5 in district play on the year with the loss.
With the win, the Bulldogs are the only undefeated team in district play.
The 80 points scored by Colfax in the game was its third time this season scoring 80. The other two times the Bulldogs scored 81 points. Their lowest scoring game this season was 49.
Adrik Jenkin scored 25 points to lead the Bulldogs. He also had five rebounds. Seth Lustig added 16 points, eight assists, and four rebounds and steals.
For Reardan, Rysen Soliday led the Screaming Eagles with 23 total points, 10 of which came in the first quarter. Evan Krupke had 12 points.
"We hung around for a little bit, but we failed to communicate at times and with a kid like Jenkin, he can get it going, and that's what he did," Reardan head coach Jake Green said. "We are still learning and will continue to do so. The kids are getting better everyday."
Reardan will take on the Lancers following the girls on Friday, Jan. 19, in Reardan. The boys are set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
