Davenport takes down LRS

Girls pull away, boys control game

DAVENPORT-Victories came in pairs for Gorilla basketball against Lind-Ritzville/Sprague/Washtucna/Harrington. The girls pulled away in the second half for a 48-39 triumph, while the boys got a 54-44 win over the Broncos Tuesday, Jan. 16.

The girls got their third win in a row after routing Asotin 61-13 Saturday, Jan. 13 and defeating Waterville-Mansfield 59-43 Monday, Jan. 15.

The first half was a defensive slugfest, with neither team finding much offense. Glenna Soliday was the exception, as she poured in 13 first half points as Davenport took a slim 21-19 lead into halftime.

Clare Lathrop erupted in the second half, scoring 19 of her game-high 23 points to go with 10 rebounds and Davenport built a lead as high as 13 points en route to the 9-point victory.

Soliday added 17 points in the win.

"We had way too many turnovers in the first half, unforced, but I think we probably had less in the third quarter," Davenport head coach Stacia Soliday said. "We finally were doing a better job of getting the ball to Clare when she's open and not passing when she wasn't open."

The Gorillas held LRS star Zoe Galbreath in check, as the sophomore managed just eight points, six of which came in the fourth quarter.

"We didn't shoot well. I don't want to take anything away from our defense, but I think some of it was we just didn't shoot well," LRS head coach Bryce Court said. "They were starting to score, so we couldn't get out and run and that created another problem."

Davenport improved to 10-4 with the victory and is rewarded by traveling to first-place Colfax at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19.

"I think we've grown together a lot as a team and we've gotten closer," Lathrop said.

The boys, meanwhile, were trying to snap a 2-game losing streak following a 56-44 loss to Asotin last Saturday. They did so with balanced scoring from Caige Colbert, Maddox Schumacher and Jaeger Jacobsen.

Colbert had a game-high 18 points and added eight rebounds, while Jacobsen had 16 points and nine rebounds. Schumacher added 14 points.

"We work on it in practice quite a bit, just making sure we share the ball with everyone and make sure everyone's contributing to the team," Colbert said.

And Davenport stepped up defensively, holding the Broncos to 44 points and not allowing any LRS player to score in double figures.

Lance Williamson and Brock Kinch were the high point scorers for LRS with nine points apiece, while Williamson had 11 rebounds.

"Throughout the season we've done a pretty decent job of D'ing up teams," Davenport head coach Matt Henry said. "I think we've allowed 60 points only like three times this year, which I'm really proud of these guys for."

Davenport is now 5-9 this season and heads to undefeated Colfax at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19.
