Davenport boys pull away from Reardan

Gorillas secure season sweep over ScrEagles

REARDAN - Almost all of Davenport's 2022-23 state championship boys team graduated last year, but the Gorillas still had just enough firepower to make sure they didn't lose to Reardan this year. Davenport found enough offense and stops on defense in the second half en route to a 53-50 win over the Screaming Eagles Tuesday, Jan. 23.

The win gave Davenport two wins in as many tries over Reardan this season and puts the Gorillas in control of its destiny for the No. 4 seed in the NE2B North Division. Reardan, meanwhile, will need to string some wins together and get some help from Davenport to climb back to No. 4 and avoid the No. 5 seed.

Tuesday night's game was close throughout. Davenport led 12-11 after a quarter before Reardan had a strong second quarter to take a 24-21 lead into halftime.

Back battled Davenport in the third quarter, and the game was tied 35-35 going into the final eight minutes.

That's when Davenport's offense woke up. Three-pointers from Caige Colbert and Jaeger Jacobsen and an and-1 layup from Maddox Schumacher gave the Gorillas a 49-42 lead with 4:42 left.

"(We were) able to focus up in the game and staying calm (while) doing what we do best in pushing the ball," Colbert said.

Rysen Soliday wasn't going to let Reardan go away quietly. He scored 10 points in the final four minutes to draw Reardan within two.

"That's a good team, so we had to work hard," Davenport head coach Matt Henry said.

Uncharacteristically, Jacobsen missed two free throws up two points and Reardan secured possession with 13.2 seconds left. But Soliday's game-tying drive attempt banked off the front rim and Davenport held on for the win after Jacobsen hit one of two free throw tries with a second left.

Colbert had one of his best games of the season, leading Davenport with 18 points and four rebounds. Schumacher added 14 points and Jacobsen had 12 points for Davenport.

Soliday led Reardan with 18 points and Maveric Sobotta had 10 points for the Screaming Eagles.

Davenport improved to 7-10 with the win and hosts St. George's at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26. Reardan fell to 7-8 with its third straight loss and is at Chewelah Friday night.
