Reardan girls scrap past Davenport

ScrEagles maintain division lead

REARDAN - Two rivals separated by a 13-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 2 play a similar style: Gritty, tough, scrappy and not afraid to make the game ugly. That was apparent Tuesday night, and it was the Reardan Screaming Eagle girls that played that style just a bit better than Davenport.

Reardan held on for a 51-41 win Jan. 23 to improve to 11-5 this season and maintain a 1-game lead in the NE2B North Division with a week left before the District 7 Tournament.

"I loved our energy and will to win, but I was disappointed with our ability to follow our game plan," Reardan head coach Bob Swannack said. "We show too many signs of our youth and I'm hoping, as time passes, we will start to play as we prepare. With this said, our energy and pride were the difference in the game."

Reardan jumped out to an 11-3 lead, but Davenport responded with an 11-5 spurt to cut the ScrEagle lead to 16-14 after a quarter.

The home team controlled the second quarter to build a 29-23 lead by halftime. The two teams played an even third quarter before Reardan made just enough plays and locked the Gorillas down defensively to build the final margin to double digits.

Chasyn Waters led Reardan with 18 points and six rebounds, while sister Tenice Waters added 14 points and nine rebounds. MacKenzie Bjornberg added 10 points for Reardan.

"We're all just trying to get better, because we know what's ahead of us and we're excited for it, too," Chasyn Waters said.

Jensyn Jacobsen led Davenport with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Glenna Soliday added 10 points and Clare Lathrop had eight points and 12 rebounds for the Gorillas.

"They did a better job driving it and attacking our post and getting around us," Davenport head coach Stacia Soliday said. "We just weren't attacking as much, so they did a good job."

The win means Reardan still has two league losses, while Davenport now has four and will likely be the North No. 3 seed at Districts.

The Screaming Eagles are one game in the loss column ahead of Northwest Christian and play at the Crusaders at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27.

But first, Reardan hosts Chewelah at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26.

And Davenport will host St. George's at the same time Friday night.
