SPOKANE VALLEY - Reardan freshmen flexed their muscles in the team's dominating win over St. George's in their opening game of the girls NE2B District Tournament Saturday, Feb 3. The Screaming Eagles won the game 59-24.
Freshman Rylynn Green was the spark that ignited Reardan's offensive attack in the first quarter. From the outset, she took the ball straight to the basket, scoring the first eight points for her team. As Green attacked the inside, freshmen Lillie Whitman and Chasyn Waters each hit 3-point shots to put the Screaming Eagles up 18-2 after one quarter.
Whitman made two more treys in the second quarter as Reardan built its halftime lead to 30-9.
In the second half, the Screaming Eagles outscored St. George's 29-15 to run away with the 59-24 victory.
Chasyn Waters led the Screaming Eagles in scoring with 16 points. Whitman hit four 3-point shots and finished the game with 14 points. Green scored 11 points. Junior Mackenzie Bjornberg scored 10 points and controlled the boards with nine rebounds. Green said her parents held the key to her scoring spree in the first quarter.
"My mom and dad told me that I need to be more aggressive, so I was," she said.
Green commended Whitman for her outside shooting.
"She was on fire which opened things up inside," she said.
"My shooting has gotten way better since the start of the season," Whitman said. "I'm shooting with more confidence now. As a team, we are sharing the ball better and hitting the open player."
"We took care of business early," head coach Bob Swannack said. "We had some kids step up tonight which is a big difference maker this time of the year. Lillie Whitman shot really well and Rylynn Green started out hot. It's going to be tough to box and one us when we've got kids stepping up and hitting their shots."
