509 showdown: Gorillas, Eagles storm the course

SPOKANE — With autumn leaves crunching underfoot, the Davenport Gorillas and Reardan Screaming Eagles tore across the Spokane Polo Grounds on Saturday for the eighth annual Battle for the 509 cross-country meet, racing on a swift, mostly grass course mixed with dirt and gravel.

The meet featured middle school, novice, junior varsity, and varsity races, with awards for the top 20 in middle school races, top 10 in novice and JV races, and top 10 in varsity races at the closing ceremony.
