REARDAN - Davenport defeated Reardan 3-1 in a penalty-kick shootout Tuesday, Oct. 20 after the teams played to a scoreless tie through regulation and two five-minute overtimes.
The win avenged Davenport's shootout loss earlier this season. Reardan won the first meeting in a shootout at Davenport on Sept. 29. Tuesday's loss dropped Reardan to 3-11. Davenport improved to 5-7-1.
The Gorillas made their first two penalty kicks, missed wide on their third and made their fourth. Davenport goalkeeper Fiona Strozyk stopped Reardan's first and third attempts. Reardan scored on its second try and sent its fourth over the crossbar.
"It was a defensive battle, with good effort from both teams," Davenport coach Monty Soliday said. "Anything can happen in a shootout. They got us at home, so I guess we decided to return the favor. That was our fifth shootout this year and third in a row, so we are getting awfully experienced and a little more confident each time."
Reardan played without its starting goalkeeper, which forced Breedlove to shift players into new spots.
"Shout-out to Jordyn Abrahamson, Audrey Ray and Mariana Agapith for playing an amazing game filling in that center back position."
"We knew going in that this was going to be a tough game, and it did not disappoint," he said. "Both teams played amazing, and a shootout is anybody's game."
Davenport returns home Tuesday, Oct. 27, to host Freeman.
Tuesday's match completed a stretch of three games in six days for Reardan. The Screaming Eagles lost 8-0 to unbeaten Northwest Christian (12-0) on Thursday, Oct. 15, then beat Kettle Falls 8-0 at home Saturday, Oct. 17.
"I knew that Northwest Christian was going to be a tough one," Breedlove said. "We went in with an attitude of having fun, working hard and practicing what we have been doing," he said.
In its game with Kettle Falls, Reardan led 6-0 at halftime. Breedlove moved players into new positions for the second half.
"About halfway through, Kettle started playing reckless, so we moved our players back to their normal positions," Breedlove said.
Sophomore Haylee Lyle scored four goals against Kettle Falls, and Carmella Oxstien, Kobe Andrews, Gianna Breedlove and Sophie Clouse each added a goal.
Reardan returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 27, when it hosts Chesterton Academy.
