Friday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. the Harrington Food Bank dispensed five tons of food at the Harrington Nazarene Church while God's Closet at the Harrington Community Church also had a good turnout and a great turnover of clothing which will allow their staff the space to put out a new supply of clothing that had been held in reserve. Summer reading ends Emma Aldrich organized the youngsters into the reading circle and began a story about Super-Hero Firemen. Summer Reading In spite of summer vacations, Bridget Rohner has managed to keep the statistics high with the attendance this fourth week at 15 children. The group began with the reading of a story, for which the children were very attentive. The major theme this week was the five senses and the children thoroughly enjoyed the hands-on approach. For the third week of the summer reading program, the children listened to a short story of the super-power of a dog’s nose which gives them the ability to find people lost in snow, or find drugs or explosives in the airport, or find lost children during a fire. When Odessa travelers cross over Mohler Road E. toward Sprague, they cross over an area formerly referred to as the “Four Corners,” “Unbewust corner” or “the old Liberty school.” Approaching Harrington-Tokio Road from the west, there is an old homestead to the north, encircled by trees and outbuildings. City Council The Harrington City Council met May 13. Of the three candidates who applied to fill the summer position for the city crew, only one was interviewed. The hiring of Justin Carnahan was approved. Abatement notices were sent to citizens with overgrown yards. All recipients have made progress with cleanup, but some violations will take longer to bring into compliance. Some citizens are annoyed with yards that remain a fire hazard. The former Harrington Haus is finally drying out with the new owner, John Dempsey, working long, hard hours and continuously ventilating the structure. Several on-lookers contemplated the removal of the old pool table which Dempsey was not interested in trying to preserve. At one point, Gene Dietrich had stipulated that he wanted to remove the pool table prior to the signing of the papers, but in the final analysis, Dietrich was not willing to remove it. Although The Odessa Record avoids publishing rumors, the Record obliged the people of Harrington by publishing in the October 13, 2013 issue the rumor that the Harrington Haus was closing its doors for failure to keep the building up to code. Last week the Harrington Lions Club repainted the large meeting room of the Memorial Hall, replaced damaged ceiling tiles and made other cosmetic repairs. The late Louis Schutz was a Harrington farmer who enjoyed game hunting when he was not busy keeping his farming operations going.
